Center for Book Arts, New York, NY:

I will be teaching a two day workshop introducing the methods of constructing carousel books, sometimes called star books. A book first produced in the 1930’s, the format is mostly used in children’s books. Why should they have all the fun? A carousel book can be viewed section by section and also opened fully to create a book in the round. Students will make models and also construct their own individual examples using their own drawings, photographs, rubber stamps, collages, etc. Center for Book Arts: Class Details

I will be teaching a workshop where students will explore the development of content for artists’ books and explore the proper forms to communicate that content. Various prompts and three simple printing methods will be used to generate content. A variety of simple bookbinding techniques combined with writing exercises, brainstorming activities and discussions will yield a number of mock-ups for artist’s books. Students may bring structural formats and/or their own writings if they would like them included in the discussions. The workshop will be held at the Maine Media College in Rockport, Maine.

I will be teaching a Carousel Book workshop at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, OH, USA.

Three Times Around the Carousel Books
June 22-23, 2013 10:00AM – 4:00PM
Here is your chance to make books based on a deeply rooted history with an eye-popping, sculptural esthetic. This two-day workshop will introduce three methods of constructing carousel books, also known as star books. A carousel book is a three-dimensional form that can be viewed section by section and also opened fully to create a book in the round. Developed in the Victorian era for use as souvenirs or novelties, this format is now mostly used in children’s books. But why should they have all the fun? You will be introduced to a window style of carousel book, a wall and floor style that allows for pop-ups, and a hybrid devised by Emily Martin that features elements of both methods of construction. You will learn the simple geometry of carousels while constructing your own models and will be able to use you own drawings, photographs, rubber stamps, collages and more as embellishments to make them uniquely yours.

This workshop explores a number of book structures that have elements which appear and disappear when the book is manipulated: they can tell stories and present images and ideas in ways that conventional formats just can’t. Various books ranging from flag accordion books to 2 and 3 dimensional flexagons to magic wallets and Jacob’s Ladders will be presented.

Santa Fe workshop and exhibit

It was a pleasure to spend last weekend in Santa Fe. The exhibit is actually three exhibits in one, the first includes a selection of work from artists around the country, an exhibit of the local Book Arts Group and an exhibit of current students at Santa Fe Community College. The tunnel book workshop was quite successful, many models and starts to finished books were made.
