Here is your chance to make books based on a deeply rooted history with an eye-popping, sculptural esthetic. This two-day workshop will introduce three methods of constructing carousel books, also known as star books. A carousel book is a three-dimensional form that can be viewed section by section and also opened fully to create a book in the round. Developed in the Victorian era for use as souvenirs or novelties, this format is now mostly used in children’s books. But why should they have all the fun? You will be introduced to a window style of carousel book, a wall and floor style that allows for pop-ups, and a hybrid devised by Emily Martin that features elements of both methods of construction. You will learn the simple geometry of carousels while constructing your own models and will be able to use you own drawings, photographs, rubber stamps, collages and more as embellishments to make them uniquely yours.

Registration is now open at Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation

For Valentine’s Day my sister Martha gave me a box of 100 Pantone® color postcards. They seemed to cry out for some kind of special activity. Sooo, on Facebook, I asked for volunteers to receive these postcards, randomly selected, stamped and addressed to me. The 99 other makers will then consider the color they have been given and do something to the postcard in response to that color and put it back in the mail to me. The only restriction is that the postcard be able to pass through the US Postal Service.

Eventually there will be an exhibit at CSPS, Legion Arts, in Cedar Rapids, IA USA. Check the POSTCARDS page through the links to see the postcards as they come in. I will also post the images and names on the Pantone Postcard Project page on Facebook page.

The postcards are due April 22, 2013.

The Codex Book Fair was as always lots of fun and very exhausting. This year it was also very successful regarding sales. The two new books were very well received and the last copy of Not a Straight Line was sold to a private collector. In addition to its inclusion in the Al Mutanabbi Street Project the book is in a number of private collections and the public collections of the University of Iowa, the University of Washington, Columbia University, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, IUPUI, UC Berkeley, Michigan State University, and the University of Vermont.
