The 2018 Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design winner is Sara Langworthy of Iowa City, Iowa for her design of Naturans Naturata (2017) by Sara Langworthy. The judges also selected Black Rock Press, as the first runner-up for the entry titled Selected Durations by David Abel, Black Rock Press, Reno, Nevada, (2017). The judges also selected Rebecca Chamlee as the second runner-up for the entry titled At Low Water by Rebecca Chamlee, Simi Valley, California: Pie In The Sky Press, (2017). In no particular order, the judges also selected the following as honorable mentions: Jerry Kelly for The Noblest Roman by Jerry Kelly and Misha Beletsky. Boston: David R. Godine, Publisher, (2016), and Emily Martin for Funny Peculiar Funny Ha Ha by Emily Martin and William Shakespeare. Iowa City, Iowa: Naughty Dog Press, (2017).
Sixty outstanding items were entered in the competition this year; the judges were very impressed with the quality of the books they reviewed. It was obvious to all involved that the entries show that fine printing is alive and well, and indeed flourishing. It is our sincere hope that the Hertzog book design contest will encourage artisans to continue to produce well-designed, finely-printed books and pamphlets.
The winner, runners-up, and other selected entries will be on display after the Awards Ceremony for two months, which will take place on February 18.

My book All Sorts has been selected as a Gallery Choice award winner in the exhibit Pop-Up Now II, an international, juried exhibition of handmade pop-up and movable artists books at 23 Sandy Gallery, 623 NE 23rd Ave., Portland, OR. The Gallery Choice award was made by owner and artist Laura Russell. She says “As a graphic designer I find this book is not only an example of stellar design and color, but it is a well-researched and well-conceived work where each and every element from the structure, inspired by orange crates, to the double alphabet, counts. It is also flawlessly executed. Top notch quality.”
